Alternative Education

For over 40 years, Gillis School has provided educational and therapeutic services to children with behavior disorders who do not have the skills to function successfully in a public school setting. Gillis School accepts boys and girls between the ages of five and eighteen with below average to above average intellectual abilities.

Each classroom is staffed with a certified special education teacher and a para-professional. Our students are grouped by grade and age with a maximum class size of 10.

In response to the community’s request for programming to serve students with both emotional disturbance and significant learning concerns (below 70 IQ), Gillis launched the Gillis School East program in the fall of 2005. Students in the East program enjoy a wide range of life skills services embedded into the academic curriculum to support each individual is his/her transition back to either a neighborhood school environment or independent living. Gillis School East limits class size to 8 students.

2007 Statistics
  • 95 children participated in Day Treatment services from 22 school districts
  • 76% of Gillis Day Treatment students were from Jackson County
  • The STARS (Students That Accept Responsibility and Success) program achieved its goal that 95% of students would earn at least one STARS Award during the school year. On average, 35% of more of our students earn an award each quarter.
