Our Programs & Services
Since 1870, Gillis has been dedicated to serving the needs of
children and families of Kansas City. Gillis’ services have
undergone many changes over the years. From our beginnings as a
support service for families following the Civil War, to our
years as an orphanage, to the current focus of assisting
troubled children and their families to become healthy and
self-sufficient, we have remained steadfast to our original
mission of helping the “needy and distressed” of Kansas City.
Gillis is also committed to serving the needs of children and
families in the future. Our strong foundation and quality care
and innovative vision will guide us as we adjust to the changes
of the 21st century.
Gillis extends services top over 900 families each year through
the following programs:

Stories
Davion was a young teenaged boy living with extended
family members when his behavior became uncontrollable.
He began behaving violently toward his caregivers and
was generally uncooperative. His caregivers reached out
to Gillis through the Family Focus program. Immediately
Davion began receiving therapy both at home and at Gillis
through a brief residential stay.

As part of their community service hours at Rockhurst
High School, two young men volunteered at Gillis,
working with the residential students. One day they
looked around and realized that the common areas were
not what they, as “typical” teenagers, would like to
look at every day. So, they undertook a cottage
renovation project.
